Cohiba

First introduced in 1966, Cohiba cigars were reserved for only top Cuban officials and diplomats. It wasn’t until 1982 when Cohiba were enjoyed among the public with the availability of three sizes: Lanceros, Coronas Especiales and Panetelas. Then, another three more vitolas (cigar term for size or shape) were introduced in 1989: Espléndidos, Robustos and Exquisitos. Altogether, the six cigars are what is now known as 'La Línea Clásica'. In 1992, in celebration of Columnbus’ 500th year anniversary to his arrival on the Caribbean Island of Cuba, Cohiba introduced 'Linea 1492' with five new vitolas –– with the completed Siglo VI released more recently. Till today, Cohiba remains as the 'King of the Cubans', more notably being Fidel Castro’s favourite smoke.

H. Upmann

H.Upmann’ story begins in 1844, when Herman Upmann, a cigar-loving banker invested in a cigar factory that doubled as a bank and cigar business. Unfortunately, the company closed in 1922, but was revived by British company J. Frankau & Co. until 1935 and sold to Menendez y García Company that instilled the reputation of H. Upmann as it is known today. While the larger sizes, with a smooth subtle mouthfeel are most sought after cigars, the H. Upmann’s are normally a mild- to medium-bodied smoke –– a beginner’s favourite.

HABANOS COMBINACIONES

HOYO DE MONTERREY

Touted as one of the greatest Cuban cigar factories on the island of Cuba, Hoyo de Monterrey, translating to 'Valley of Monterrey', was founded in 1865 by José Gener, a tobacco leaf grower, as a tribute to the extremely fertile soil in the famed Vuelta Abajo region. With a smooth silky richness, a complex taste and balanced fragrance and flavour, Hoyo de Monterrey Double Coronas have become known as the most sought after Cuban cigar ever made, while the Hoyo Série, debuted in 1970, is stronger and more full-bodied. Made in 7 factories with the finest Cuban tobacco, the Hoyo de Monterrey Double Coronas or the Hoyo de Monterrey Épicure No. 2 are top recommendations.

MONTECRISTO

Launched under the H. Upmann factory in 1935, Montecristo is named as a tribute to the cigar-smoking protagonist in Alexandre Dumas’s 1844 novel, 'The Count of Monte Cristo'. Today, the cigars are affectionately known as ‘Monties’ and account for almost 25 percent of Cuba’s annual cigar export. Sizes ‘A’ and ‘Esepcialies’ were added after the original five sizes, and are full-flavoured and distinctive in the tobacco-blend palate unique only to Montecristo.

PARTAGÁS

Partagás cigars have long been a favourite choice for slow enjoyment on long afternoons and evenings post a satisfying meal. Established in 1845 by Don Jaime Partagás, it’s a reputed brand that’s known as one of the oldest within the industry. With a full, rich smoke tempered by earthy flavours, Partagás, particularly the Partagás Lusitania, are made with outstanding quality which explains the constant shortage as well as hefty price tag.

ROMEO Y JULIETA

Affectionately referred to as ‘Romeos’ by longtime fans, Romeo y Julieta was founded in 1875, and at its peak, printed over 2,000 different cigar bands. A popular Havana brand, Romeo y Julieta upholds an impressive standard to superior quality despite having over 40 shapes and sizes. More notably, the brand has been credited to be an influence for the ‘Churchill’ cigar, which was created in honour of the late British Prime Minister, who took his cigar with a straightened paper clip inserted through resulting in unusually long hold on the ash and ultimately unnerving his guests (usually foreign heads of state) during gripping negotiations.
